Ever since the 90s, coloured bathrooms have been severely off-trend. I remember my friend moving into a house with a bright blue suite and being desperate to rip it out. I quite liked it, it looked retro and well-made, but I had to agree it looked dated.
Now, all of a sudden, colour is coming back. It started with coloured baths but it’s spreading to the entire room. No one wants a white bathroom any more – these are now the sign of dated decor (sorry – I don’t make the rules).
Which colours are on-trend?
The great news is, the colours are down to preference. Anything that isn’t white screams modern, but some colours are more desired than others.
If you’re planning to sell your house in the near future, you might have more interest in a bathroom that’s white and navy instead, rather than one where every inch is olive green, including the toilet paper.
The only advice I’d give, is choose wisely. If you think a bright yellow bath will make you happy, don’t let anyone stop you. If you want to move in the next couple of years, maybe go for an option that’s easy to change.
Easy ways to do the coloured baths trend
When it comes to getting sorted with a colourful bath, there are a few ways to work it. All of them are relatively easy, but some need more skill or money than others.
Below are the best easy ways to get a coloured bath.
1. Paint your bath a different colour
It might seem like something that’s totally impossible, but you can actually paint your bathtub. I’ve seen beautiful makeovers when people have wanted to disguise their coloured suite and want to make it white, so it makes sense you can switch it up the other way. I haven’t done it personally so would hate to pass on any wrong info, but here’s a bath painting guide written by an expert.
2. Replace your bath
This is a really obvious option, but you might not realise what colours are available if your local supplier favours white in his showroom.
You can buy coloured enamel baths that usually come in white (we know), blue, green, pink, lilac, grey and a few other earth tones and pastels.
Another option is to go for metal baths that have a metallic finish, like copper or brass to add colour in a more sophisticated way.
Freestanding baths are also popular as the exterior is often available in the colour of your choosing, but the area you need to sit in is usually white or neutral.
3. Paint or replace the bath panel
When you have a fixed bath panel that hides all the plumbing of the bath, you pop it off and paint it. It will change the way your bathroom looks without costing too much. While the bath itself won’t be a different colour, it’s an excellent compromise. It’s also very spending savvy.
4. Add a peel and stick veneer to your bath panel
Rather than painting to achieve a coloured bath, you can use a peel and stick veneer that already has a pattern. You can get everything from faux tiles to a wallpaper style pattern, which is a great way to give your bath a hassle-free makeover.
5. Accessorize
If you’re stuck renting and what to achieve a more colourful bathroom without making major changed then this option is for you. So what if you can’t change the bath or paint the walls, there’s plenty that you can do. Start with buying a new colour scheme of towels and wash cloths to be displayed in the bathroom. Add artwork to the walls if you can’t paint them, and maybe even add a plant and candle to every bare surface. Greenery any and other cool little accessories will give you a colourful bathroom and bring your plain white suite to life.
